EXCERPT:

Prenatal and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders are very common. In the United States alone, over 3.5 million women give birth each year. Since the rate of perinatal (pregnancy through the first postpartum year) depression is about 20 percent, at least 700,000 of these women will become ill. The rate of gestational diabetes is between 1 and 3 percent, and the rate of a Down syndrome baby occurring in a thirty-five-year-old mother is 3 percent. Curiously, screening is routine for these conditions, yet screening for perinatal depression—which occurs in 1 in 5 mothers—is not.

While working in our communities, we have been asked numerous times to provide simple guidelines for assessment and treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Mothers and their partners have been asking the question, “Why is this happening to us and what can we do about it?” Many good books and journal articles have already been written on this topic. Our main goal is to summarize the most current research and information into a practical, easy-to-use format.

This book is not meant to be used as a replacement for individual counseling, group support, or medical assessment, nor do we intend it to be a comprehensive textbook. Beyond the Blues will provide critical information for providers and families. Our intention is to offer the most essential and up-to-date assessment, treatment, and resources possible.
